Wanyin and Xiahou Dan identify the novel's coming drought as one of the events that eventually destroys them and begin looking for ways to avert it. Meanwhile, Prince Duan probes Wanyin for information, and Wanyin realises from Yonger's sachet that Yonger and the prince are already involved.

Xie Yonger tries to frame Wanyin by having a valuable pearl/relic stolen and planted in her quarters. Wanyin anticipates the scheme and replaces the incriminating object, turning the attempted frame-up against Wei Guifei's family. The relic is ultimately produced before the emperor, exposing inconsistencies in Wei Guifei's account and giving Xiahou Dan an opening against the powerful Wei faction. At the same time, Xiahou Dan and Wanyin continue exploiting their knowledge of the original novel while Prince Duan becomes increasingly alert to deviations from the story.

A fire is deliberately set at the library, nearly killing Wanyin as part of the attempt to destroy evidence. Xiahou Dan arrives in time to prevent Wanyin from being taken by Prince Duan and quietly eliminates those responsible. Wanyin is subsequently elevated to Guifei and moves into Zhaoyang Palace. She and Xiahou Dan also encounter the mysterious Beizhou, whose connection to Xiahou Dan's past will become increasingly important.

Wanyin and Xiahou Dan discover that the mysterious "proprietress" they have encountered is actually Beizhou, a man capable of disguise, bone-contraction and changing his appearance. Xiahou Dan persuades him to enter the palace and protect Wanyin. Meanwhile, Prince Duan investigates Wanyin's past and becomes suspicious when he discovers she has already removed her old handwriting and paintings from her family home. Beizhou retrieves Xu Yao's records, which reveal that Prince Duan intends to gain control of the Imperial Guard as part of a rebellion. Xiahou Dan also receives another message from the mysterious Mr Bai telling him to kill the "demon consort", but his growing attachment to Wanyin makes that increasingly impossible.

More importantly, Wanyin studies Xu Yao's records and discovers something frightening: events no longer unfold exactly as the novel described them. Prince Duan is adapting to their moves and making independent decisions. Wanyin begins to realise that knowing the original story will not guarantee victory.

After Xie Yonger is promoted, Wanyin publicly appears to have fallen from favour. Prince Duan secretly summons Wanyin to the flower house and interrogates her about her apparent knowledge of future events and the strange behaviour of Xiahou Dan. Their exchange confirms Wanyin's growing suspicion that Prince Duan is not another transmigrator. He is a native of this world who thinks, adapts and acts beyond the constraints of the original plot. That makes him substantially more dangerous than Wanyin originally believed.

Xiahou Dan and Wanyin meet the talented scholars they have been trying to recruit and finally convince them to serve the emperor and the country. Their success is immediately challenged when Prince Duan's assassins attack. Wanyin desperately tries to save the scholars, haunted by her inability to save Xu Yao, but Du Shan dies despite their efforts. Beizhou wipes out the attacking assassins, although Prince Duan escapes. Furious at the disastrous failure, Prince Duan kills the adviser whose plan led to the ambush. The surviving scholars' loyalty to Xiahou Dan is strengthened by seeing him risk himself for them.

Xiahou Dan and Beizhou therefore stage a supernatural explanation, convincing Xie Yonger to describe her knowledge as visions or divination so that her story matches Wanyin's. Meanwhile, scholars Li Yunxi and Cen Jintian present research useful for preparing the country for drought, including information about drought-resistant yan millet. But Wanyin notices something troubling: Xiahou Dan's knowledge of economics is far too poor for the successful CEO he claimed to have been before transmigrating. She finally confronts him about who he really is.

Later he gives her a new explanation: he claims he was never a CEO at all but merely an unsuccessful bit-part actor who allowed Wanyin to make the wrong assumption. Wanyin accepts the explanation for the moment, although a deeper secret remains. Mr Bai again urges Xiahou Dan to eliminate the demon consort, but Xiahou Dan refuses to harm Wanyin. Xie Yonger also begins noticing that Wanyin occupies a uniquely privileged place in the emperor's life.

At the same time, the government begins distributing drought-resistant yan millet seeds, offering future tax reductions to encourage farmers to plant them. The preparations Wanyin and Xiahou Dan began because of their foreknowledge are becoming actual state policy, meaning they are starting to change the disastrous future rather than merely survive it.

Meanwhile A-Bai, aware that his master distrusts Wanyin, tries to tempt Wanyin away from palace life. Information about the neighbouring Yan kingdom also reveals the history of Shanyi, whose failed assassination of Xiahou Dan helped trigger hostilities with Yan. Palace intrigue then turns against Wanyin: Xiaomei becomes implicated in an attack on Shufei, and Wanyin ultimately takes the political fall. She is sent to the Cold Palace, apparently marking a dramatic collapse in her position.

Prince Duan sees an opportunity to recruit the supposedly discarded Wanyin. She plays along, feeding him carefully crafted information and exploiting his continued desire to identify Xiahou Dan's mysterious martial-arts expert. The apparent breakup therefore becomes another layer of their counter-intelligence operation.

They disguise themselves in the fallen soldiers' uniforms and head for Beishan, intending to confront Xiahou Dan. Wanyin and Yonger meanwhile grow closer, and Wanyin's attempts to manage the suddenly sycophantic harem produce some of the episode's comedy. Later Wanyin uses the secret tunnel to visit Xiahou Dan, and the two share an affectionate moment that Yonger accidentally interrupts.

The Dowager's death is temporarily concealed while they search desperately for a way to save him. Prince Duan, unable to verify exactly what has happened inside the palace, prepares his next move.

The political contest finally becomes open warfare: Prince Duan calls for the "demon consort" to be killed and claims to be purging evil from the emperor's side. Xiahou Dan and Wanyin are forced into a fight for survival as the coup begins.

In it comes the enormous revelation: he did not arrive only shortly before meeting her. He tells Wanyin that after so long here he no longer has another home: she has become his home. He leaves her the skylark hairpin as a token and directs her south toward the Right Army. Meanwhile Xiahou Dan is captured and tortured by Prince Duan, who wants him to write an abdication edict. Wanyin escapes with her guards and befriends a mute girl whom she names Huahua.

Following Xiahou Dan's instructions, Wanyin uses the skylark hairpin to make contact with allies and reaches the Right Army. There she discovers that A-Bai is actually Lin Xuanying, now deputy commander. Another hidden history is revealed: his master foresaw the arrival of an otherworldly person capable of changing the nation's fate and originally sent him to protect Xiahou Dan. Xiahou Dan subsequently planted Lin Xuanying within the army as part of a long-term contingency plan. Wanyin therefore discovers that Dan has spent years quietly building the pieces needed to survive exactly this kind of coup. Huahua continues following Wanyin despite being told to leave.

Wanyin ultimately finds and reunites with Xiahou Dan, turning what appeared to be his defeat into the beginning of their counterattack.

Their allies seize the city gates; the Left and Central armies surrender while the Right Army is already loyal to Xiahou Dan. Prince Duan is captured and Wanyin's family is rescued. Then comes the devastating revelation: the "Xiahou Dan" Prince Duan had previously imprisoned was actually Beizhou in disguise. Beizhou deliberately impersonated the emperor and endured torture as part of a plan to kill Duan, but dies from his injuries after the attempt fails. Xiahou Dan is overwhelmed by the loss and suffers another severe attack.

Her true background is exposed, connecting her to another destroyed people and to a revenge plan that extends beyond Prince Duan's rebellion. Xiahou Dan's poisoned body becomes the final target, and Huahua sets in motion a trap that appears to force Wanyin into an impossible choice between her own life and his.
